Who can provide and support me as a Business Analyst?

Securing a role as a Business Analyst (BA) is a significant achievement, but it is crucial to have a support mechanism in place to maintain the position in the long term. Regardless of experience, the following steps can help you continue to develop in your role:

Find a BA mentor who can guide you in your role. Your mentor can share their experiences and provide you with the necessary tools to succeed in your role. Mentors act as a guide to ensure that you avoid making mistakes that could jeopardise your position. Having a mentor is common in most careers, so don't be afraid or shy to seek their support. Once you have gained more experience, you can also give back by mentoring others, which will also help you improve your skills.

Prepare templates in advance to expedite your work. Collating templates that you can use when needed will help you manage relationships with key stakeholders in your organisation. However, always check if the organisation already has templates in place before using your own.

Compile a list of questions to seek clarification and understanding when you start your role. In your first week, you will receive a lot of information, so asking the right questions will help you gain a better understanding of your role.

Have a BA buddy to share ideas with and to check your work. It's best to have someone outside of the organisation in the first week, but over time, you can identify someone within the team who you can trust and work with. Building relationships with your team is essential.

Keep learning. When you join an organisation, you will have a lot to learn to help you deliver effectively in your role. Keep an open mind, ask questions, and be receptive to feedback. Passing your probation will require extensive learning and meeting your responsibilities. Acquiring skills such as advanced Excel proficiency will set you apart from others.

Join a BA community to ask questions and receive different perspectives to help you in your role.

Consider paying a senior BA to help you during your first few months on the job. Ensure you check their credentials on LinkedIn and confirm their availability to support you when needed. Paying a monthly fee can help you tap into their knowledge and receive guidance promptly.

Your journey as a BA should not be stressful if you think long-term and develop the necessary skills to advance your career. After three years in the role, you can recoup the money spent on coaching and mentoring new BAs.Finally, have a learning mindset, and you will become a better BA over time.
